Techniques

The Koei-Kan style is the fundamental system of karate taught at the Task Karate Academy.   The Koei-Kan style of karate combines techniques of Karate (blocking, punching, striking, and kicking), Judo (take downs and throws), Aikido (restraints and reverse joint techniques), and Kobudo (traditional weapons), to form an extremely well rounded system of self defense.  The Koei-Kan system was founded by Eizo Onishi in 1952.  Master Onishi was a senior student of two very prominent Okinawan Karate Instructors:  Master Kanken Toyama and Master Juhatsu Kiyoda.

Karate  practice is comprised of three essential components for development:

Kihon Waza - Basic Techniques

The practice of basic techniques set the foundation for developing self defense skill.  See Testing Requirements for list of basic techniques.

Kata - Form
A Kata is a form or pattern of karate technique which develops proper form, speed, power, balance and focus.  They are basically diagrams for
defensive maneuvers and
attacking vulnerable areas of an opponent.  There are 17 Katas taught in the curriculum.

Kumite - Sparring
Sparring training allows students to practice technique in a realistic form with an opponent.  This enables the student to develop skill and  confidence in what they learn.   Protective gear is worn to protect the students from injury.
